Dual Language Education

Dual Language Education (DLE) is a type of bilingual education that provides the opportunity for children to receive their education through two languages through dedicated times: for example, in the lower grades, an 80/20 model represents children spending 80% of instructional time in the target language and 20% in English. When Dual Language Education is done effectively, Dr. Wayne Thomas and Dr. Virginia Collier, have shown through their longitudinal studies that bilingual children who have been in a quality DLE program outperform monolingual children by the 8th and 9th grade on standardized testing. Studies also continue to show that bilingual children and adults have enhanced cognitive and linguistic capacities. Here at KCLC, we our Elementary I classroom is a 50/50 model with continued hopes of increasing our target language of Keres to 80/20.
